Hello everyone. This is my first venture into the online critiquing world and this may not be the most appropriate picture for the time of year, but please feel free to comment.

...another Calgarian....welcome Craig. I like the image the colours are fantastic but for me I'm not sure if the Orton works for me here....my eyes seem to want to find something to focus on in this image so IMO the effect isn't working here. Others might disagree but if it were me, I would ditch the Orton effect here. :) I hope that helps and again, welcome. :highfive:

I agree with Casil on this one. It might be neat to have it on a long shutter speed for the 'silky water' effect. But I would like something to focus on. I think that the orton adds to the darkness of the woods on the right.

But I like the composition and the colours are lovely.

Welcome ccross!:highfive:

I also like the composition; it's possible this image is also too compressed. What was the filesize BEFORE you uploaded it ccross? If it was greater than 250k our forum software compresses the image.

Just as an FYI - I upload images at 150k usually...and that works great.

Thanks for the input you guys. This is one of my favourites.

Marko, the original Tiff is about 30MB, I resized/compressed it down to about 200KB. It definitely lost a bit in compression.

In general I quite like the Orton look and thought this might be a good candidate, but I see what you mean about there not being anything that really stands out to focus on. I've attached the pre-Orton image below for comparison.

Thanks again,

I pretty much prefer the "pre Orton" version.

It is quite a pretty capture. You gotta love the river area. I can not tell if it is real sharp or not from this photo, though. I think I might bring up the hill area just enough to get detail and bring done the pebbles on the center right to bring out the texture there.

It is a nice composition with beautiful colors, otherwise. And welcome to another Calgarian! Woot!

As the others said ... great composition and I like the colour here as well.

As for the orton ... I think it worked very well in some of the photo but if you layer it over this original shot and blend through some sharper areas to create a point of focus then it would be a much strong shot.
