One of my favorite things to photograph up close & personal.

I thing this is a good attempt. I'd like to see the whiter petals a bit darker though. I also like to see flowers busing with colour and the pink seems a bit washed out. Was it this colour in 'reality'? The focal point is the yellow middle of the flower but it is almost dead center in the photograph. It would be stronger if it were placed on one of the 'thirds'. Maybe a higher angle looking into the flower would also have been cool.

Hope that helps,

Perhaps on your next attempt you could be better focused on the pollen; also, with shots like these it's important to make sue that the water doesn't end up too plastic-y looking

Well I hate to disagree, I think it works very well and has an almost surreal look to it. The outer softness makes your eye draw to the centre. I am sure printed and framed that would look fabulous, I would suggest a black metal (satin finish) frame and a off white matting. Just an idea :lightbulb. I have never had a good thing to say about a flower photo before, mostly dislike them, but just have to say I like this one, it actually stands out and different from the everyday flower photo. Very well done.

thanks for all the comments - good & bad. i doubt i'll get the chance to take this shot again, it was taken in a botanical garden in thailand. the color is the same as it was in reality, i just upped the saturation a tiny bit, and sharpened it a touch. otherwise, its untouched. i agree the whiter parts of the petals would look better pinker, but then again, id probably look better blond then bruntette, and thats just not natural... ;) the water is actually one of my fav things, i love how the lily pad parts are shown, and sort of frame the flower/make the background more interesting than just flat water. of course, its just an attempt, and as always theres room for improvement. thanks again for the comments. :)

From a composition standpoint your framing is too tight and a smaller fstop as in f22 would have given you a greater depth of field and sharper focus throughout...that is if you did not slightly move the camera or have too low a shutterspeed.

I don't think she has F22 on her cam... I think it's like f2 - f6 or something like that....

OK, that would be a definite limitation on depth of field. :)

yup - remember that im shooting with just my dinky sony h5...
and i like close crops on flowers, for my own reasons, but i agree another shot with more water background would also have looked good.
