OK I dragged Lisa out to Big Hill Springs, I'm sure you can imagine the complaining and carrying on. So now we are going to alternate posting shots from the morning.

This is the sun saying good morning to us

Wow Greg ... those shots in posts 1,6 and 7 are very nice work!

The sunrise is a beautiful example of a minimalist photo.

Love that amazing ice forming in #6 and that winter wonderland shot is just jam packed with interest for me, and well taken. Nice.

Sometimes a blue cast can work though ... especially in shadows with ice and snow.

If you are shooting RAW then having the wrong WB setting isn't an issue ... you just change it in post, most RAW editing programs have a white balance setting that allows you to set it right.

I used raw for these and am using lightroom in post so I have been using auto white balance to let lightroom change it and if I don't like it I change it back. RAW is new to me just this week I started working with it. I am forcing myslef (kicking and screaming I might add) to learn RAW.

Btw, I edited post 3 replacing it with a different shot...Is it any better or am I still missing something? It seems my focus was really off this morning as well...thank goodness it got better!

Casil ... post 3 is definitely a better choice now.
Don't get all confused with RAW too much ... it's actually simple to understand. It's literally the raw photo with no contamination added from any processing like a jpg is.
A jpg, even with all or most settings tunred off in your camera's menu settings is still a compressed photo, with less info at hand to work with.
The raw is a photo with loads of info at hand for processing but untouched by human hands so to speak.
What this means is the jpg is like painting with base colours and a standard canvas. A raw photos is like having dozens of canvas types and textures as well as a hugely complex colour palette as well.
When you first see the raw photo in lightroom it should not look as good as it could because you haven't processed it yet. It's now up to you to bring out the photo within instead of relying on some piece of software to apply the same processes to every shot like a jpg image. With raw, the artist within you has not finished when the button was pressed, in fact you've only just begun :)

Greg, don't under sell yourself, you are matching Casil today very well!

So you work your strengths (as you did nicely) and don't dwell on the weaknesses. Strengthen the weaknesses when you can. ;)

"Winter wonderland" and "up close n personal" totally work for me. The kind of shots I aspire to.

I personally would need an electric snowsuit and mega battery pack to be lying in the snow taking pictures...much respect for that :)

Re raw. I read on a site that with the d80 raw wasn't necessary but I'm sorry I didn't didn't use it with the last bunch of shots I took...oh well, live n learn.

Carl
'Not using RAW' does not mean 'Not taking a good photo' by any stretch. Get a jpg shot right or close to right and you can easily process it satisfactorily.

However, a RAW image allows you to get it right even if it doesn't look close in the viewfinder or lightroom etc (within reason) and it not only allows you do that, but also tends to allow you to process it in more ways or with greater control due to the depth of info kept in the file.

LOL I guess it helps if I actually set the friggin' camera into RAW file format first huh? :wall-an: :yell: :headslap:
I thought it merely involved pushing the button on the front that said RAW...no wonder I can't fix the white balance. :wall-an: :wall-an:

Mad Aussie

6 hours in a meeting!! That's a marathon!!

77 k's is a long ride for me at present. Especially seeing as we went part way up Mt Mee so it includes 8 k's of constant climbing. I keep them short this time of year usually due to the heat. As it gets cooler we'll stretch them out a bit where we can.

I have a 100 km charity ride to do in about a months time so looking forward to that.
We do loads of 100 k'ers plus in the cooler months from about April through to September.
