View Full Version : March 2010 - Photography assignment - Light & shadow

After seeing Michael's post about signs, I though what a great idea photograph a sign that is amusing or strange.

Signs is cool but I'm wondering if they have to be funny? Might be hard for people in smaller communities?

Doesn't have to be funny, but most small places have the quirky sign in some shop window.

other ideas I had are:
1. humour in general
2. indoor shots
3. alphabet (maybe this was done before?)
4. book cover illustrations (JJJ's raven picture made me think of this)
5. street photography

Book cover could be as much fun as song titles.

I like book cover titles.
I'll throw in a few suggestions just to make things interesting....We can use them in other months also:
Black and white
Juxtaposition
Symmetry
Repeating Patterns
Light and Shadow

Creating a still life where lighting is a key factor, i.e. creates texture, form, mood. Here is an example of one photographer setting up still lifes to emulate the Dutch Masters paintings for example:
beauty comma: , dutch masters? (http://beautycomma.blogspot.com/2009/09/dutch-masters.html)

I'm into book covers and light and shadow.

Many of these other ideas are good too but lack wide appeal. I'll always go with the majority (wide appeal or not)... but it's SO much nicer when the suggestion has wide appeal, because we'll get many many many more posts that way. This month is a GREAT example. :twocents:

I vote for light and shadow as it will cover the 'still lifes where lighting is a key factor' idea as well.

I would like

book covers
or
humour in general

Actually I think it would be great if we alternate between a technique style assignment like light and shadow and then the following month something creative like book covers. This way we stretch our abilities in two ways.

I agree, because honestly I could take just about any photo on my computer right now and in the future and find a book title that it would illustrate.

Greg makes an excellent point!

so how do people feel about light and shadow? I know it would be a challenge for me, but that's a good thing

I'm flexible... I'll go with whatever the group decides.

Light and shadow work for me...book titles we can do next month if the group decides. :)

We could also call it light or shadow.

We could also call it light or shadow.

this has my vote!!

Light and shadow has the most support - merging suggestion posts now.

Thx for all the suggestions everyone!!

Nice stuff B!
i took this yesterday on the way home... I know I've photographed her a lot and It's not b/c I am a particularly religious person. She is in a place I like to go and just sit when I have things to work out....I think everyone has one of those places.
When I was at one of my very lowest moments several months ago...recent split-up. new job, still burn out from the other one, new career/school about to start, I was pretty messed up. I went to this place and just sat not knowing where I was at, or going, or what to do....but I had to try and figure out how to get right with myself. I sat on the bench in front of her and just said to myself please give me some kind of indication that what I am going through right now..... all this change..... is the right path and things will get better if I just hunker down and go through this head long, head first.
I swear as I am alive today that right after I said this a rabbit popped out of the little bushes in the garden and sat right in front of me about 3 feet away. It wasn't afraid and it didn't run off...but it just sat there and looked at me. So there we all sat, Me, Mary and the rabbit...no one moving...and for some reason I knew that I would be okay. Finally after a few minutes, the rabbit moved on and so did I, literally and figuratively.

So that's why I like to photograph her. :)

I was out driving around shooting in the country side and of course when the light was getting beautiful I needed to use "the facilities" so I quickly went to a small town service station. When I came out I noticed the light on the drifts and rail tanks.Had to shoot em.

That is a great building and your tilted angle sets it apart as interesting even apart from the texture and light themselves. Well executed.

Here's one from my Devil's in the Details collection - it's an old meeting house door handle in the morning. Taken last fall -

Well, that is my daughter, she is 12 and was not "in the mood" to be photographed (her face at least). She posed willingly enough and had fun but didn't want her face and hair in the image at that time. So no is the answer to that one. I will catch her in a more face friendly mood and ask her to help me reshoot that one and try it.

The double mesh and double shadows caught my eye. A number of trees along the path are wrapped with chicken wire to protect them from the beavers. One of the apartment residents has seen one, and I've seen at least two dens. The protection works - the trees tend to fall down on their own...

6045

QuietOne
03-20-2010, 12:12 AM
And another fallen tree. Pretty much anything that isn't a hazard to walkers or rafters is left to recycle itself. There are a number of logs I take photos of several times a year. On this one, it's hard to tell where the shadow leaves off and the silvered wood starts.

I'm not looking for light and shadow subjects at every turn, honest! It's just that all these subjects force me to notice them, and then, well, I just have to take their pictures.

this is one of the bunkers from Point Pleasant Park in Halifax. I remember when they were not fenced off and made a great place to play. It made me feel sad to see them fenced off:sad:

MA, I saw the lights reflected in the lens glass and my first thought was of seed beads. But I imagine those would interfere with getting any kind of photo.

I like your other photo, too, especially the way the light and shadow is off center. The picture on the tin immediately triggered a poem I hadn't thought of in years:

"I never saw a purple cow;
I never hope to see one;
but I can tell you anyhow;
I'd rather see than be one!"

The author eventually hated it, because it got 'overplayed', and a number of people did their own versions of it.
Purple Cow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Cow)

Ain't Google wonderful?

Bambi ... it IS a heavy lens to hold! My hand is always under it while shooting and holding the tripod mount (which I flip to the top side) when walking.

QuietOne ... those 'seed beads' are actually the reflections of the LED light I was using. It has 3x 3watt Cree LEDs in a triangle pattern in the head which is what you are seeing. The different colours come from refraction as it passes through the glass elements inside the lens I guess.
Always nice when an image invokes something from one's memory :)

Casil, your picture forced me to (finally) look up the difference between a bison and a buffalo. Short answer is, they're the same thing in North America, and not quite the same thing as the ones in Africa and Asia. Nice shot, and nice statue. Do the kids rub its nose until it's shiny?

I've been wanting to try this photo for a long time and got a chance last night. The World War I statue is in Central Memorial Park in Calgary, in front of an old sandstone building which is a public library. The plaque inscription, which is sharp in the original but has lost clarity in the flickr upload, reads:
To the imperishable glory of the men of this province who fought and died for their king and country in the great war 1914-1918
Erected by Col. Macleod Chapter I.O.D.E.
