Hello all,

I am brand spanking new to this forum. I have been shooting people for about 2 years now, I have alot to learn and I would love to hear your opinions on a few of my portraits.

Art, composition, and technique are just as important as creativity when it comes to great portraits. The photographer may have a reason for his approach but unless that reason is accurately communicated to the viewer, then it becomes meaningless, sometimes clichéd, and generally ineffective.

So, for example why should the viewer be distracted from the eyes by facial blemishes or extremely oversharpened lips? Why should an image be cut in half by a vertical arm? Why are the eyes made visually important and then cut off by the edges of the framing? Why is the lighting reflected so unevenly and harshly from various parts of the face when more even lighting would seem to be a more appropriate approach?

By the way, welcome and you will certainly get an interesting view of your work here. :) :)

I quite like these portraits Chris and welcome. Generally it's best just to post 1 or 2 per thread through as the reviews flow better and will likely be more in depth.

These portraits are all creative.

Shot 1 - very strong portrait, very well done. I might like to see the eye a teeny bit lighter.

shot 2 - Lovely pose and i like the way we go right to her eye. Here eye is a bit soft though.

shot 3 - Is also interesting but is soft overall

shot 4 - Nice texture in the hair nice compostion. I might burn in a touch at the very top middle and perhaps the lips a bit.

I'd love to see more work Chris!

these are some very interesting photos. i really like the close up crops of faces, and the way youve got the eyes in most of them. the skin seems a little over done somehow. not sure why or how, but it seems to be over-powering. too much detail or oversharpened maybe? im a newbie, so this is just in my very humble opinion. great job though- especially after only 2 years!

The general rule for framing in composition is that nothing should be cut off by the frame of the photo and anything that is too close to the frame distracts the viewer's eye from the centre of interest.
