Hi, welcome to the forums. :)

A DSLR is an expensive thing to buy, so take your time. ;)
Marko (the big cheese!) has done an excellent podcast on buying your first DSLR. You should really have a go at that. You can find it here:
75 – How to buy your first DSLR (http://www.photography.ca/blog/?p=645)

It also links to another tread here in the forums that you might find usefull. You can find it here:
http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f14/calling-all-enablers-need-camera-suggestions-5821.html

Hope this will help you out, otherwise there are lots of people here who can answer any of your questions. We're all very friendly here... :)

Not sure about where you live but in UK 17+ before we go to Uni so in 5 years likely to be many changes to D-SLR design. Now the newer models can take moving pictures and use the rear screen as a view finder where this was not an option when I got mine a few years back.

Always easier if you have same make and model as college or Uni uses but I would think that is likely to change in 5 years so maybe better to consider you will up-grade before Uni and buy with idea it will be sold before you start Uni.
Not sure about second hand market but most items lose less money if bought second hand.

Maybe others will comment on this? But at 12 I would think unlikely what you buy now will be still the camera you would have selected in 5 years time.

I would enquire at Uni as to what they use. I bought a Pentax lovely camera but the college uses Canon and for every function I have to get out the book and find out how to do it. But others with Canon cameras are shown every function by Lecturer. So from personal experience I would ask the Uni what they use.

quite right, I would also get down to the shops and see what body feels right in your hands.

yeah thats true.
i thought of that and i looked up the material lists possible unis i would go to.
they have many brands. the main ones they said to buy are nikon and canon but dont specify which one theyd prefer. i rang the unis but they wernt really interested in my call :(
if i buy one for this year, would it sell for a good price at the end of this year if it is not the required one for next year?
