I constantly zoom into check focus after shooting on my compact digital, but one that thing drives me nuts is the fact that I need to hit play before I can actually zoom in. It also has a "focus check" mode, but this mode is mostly useless since it doesn't zoom in enough and it only uses about 60% of the LCD to display the zoomed area.

Ideally one should be able to just spin the multifunction wheel to immediately zoom in, or better yet, have the option to view the image at a zoom level of your choice automatically? So I'm wondering if this is a "feature" for some of the more pro models since I read Ken Rockwell talking about it as a problem on some Canons. Canon Digital Rebel T1i (EOS 500D) (http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/rebel-t1i.htm) Yeah, I know it's a nitpick, but it seems like a rather important nitpick if it disrupts your flow while shooting.

My Pentax K10D does this. After I took a shot, it displays the image for a certain amount of time (can be set in the menu, anything from 1 sec to 10 sec I guess). And I can use the rear scroll wheel to zoom in instantly. When I'm busy, the image remains even beyond the 3 seconds it's set to. The scroll wheel controls how much zoom is used, all the way to pixel level I think. Just the same as normal playback...

So, you'll have to zoom in manually, but you can do it instantly after you took the shot... :)

My Rebel XSi won't zoom unless I hit the playback button first. But since this is my first DSLR it hasn't affected my workflow since it's always worked this way for me.

On the D700 you press play to review the images. Then you press one more button and the image zooms in at the level you set in a custom function. Then when you continue to scroll you are scrolling through zoomed images.
If you press that button IMMEDIATELY after you shoot, then there's no need to press the play button since the image shows up in the viewfinder automatically. I believe I set that custom feature as well.

Aha, thanks for the tidbit of information. I guess that's one strike against the Rebel for now. I wonder if their pro models have this problem too.

I hear the Nikons have better ergonomics (subjective of course), but I'll have to dig into this more for my next trip to the camera store.
