I've tried this shot before with continuous lights, but it was too hard to freeze the motion, so thought I would have another go now I've got a speed-light. No optical trigger, so lots of trial and error to get the orange in the right place at the right time.

Thanks Marko, Maybe I should have put this in to critiques... I'm intending to have another go when I have some more time, I need to find a water container with a flat side (like a fish tank), I shot this in a pyrex dish with wasn't the best thing for the job, but was all I could find.

Do you think a faster flash sync would be better? I had this at 1/200

Nice! Did you have to worry about liquid splashing on your camera or lens?

Good decision to use the flash. It wouldn't have worked otherwise. :) And a great shot! To much to criticize here to be honest...

Last time I tried this I only had a 18-55mm and the front element did get splashed a few times. This time I did It with a longer lens, so had the camera further a way and used the cable release to control the shutter. (I also remember the towel to clean the splashes off the bowl after each try.

You could go faster than 1/200 and it will give different effects. Just be sure you are aware of the camera's max sync speed and if it can be overridden with a proprietary flash.

It's great, how you catched the effect here!

I had a chance to re-shoot tonight, Since I haven't found anything clear with a flat side, I used the pyrex dish again, but brought the camera higher. I thought I might as well push the speedlight to it's fastest sync speed 1/40000, and see if it made much of a difference.
