View Full Version : A fist full of - rocks?

There are several spots where rocks get jammed into root masses during the spring floods. The first picture is one lone tree - or stump that won't die, I'm not sure which. The others are a root mass that involves too many trees, not all of which are standing or even there any more. I'd guess it extends about 8 feet from the bank into the river. The pictures don't cover the entire expanse, just the ends. The one rock in the 2nd and 3rd photos is about the size of a human's head.

SO the rocks kind of grow up into the roots as the tree gets bigger then?

it may also be that the rising water washes away the dirt leaving the rocks behind. there's an eerie quality to these shots that's quite effective.

Kat, thanks for the compliment about the exposures. The 2nd one drove me crazy once I got it into PSE. It was a bright, sunny day, with shade over portions of the root mass. So getting it to look something like what I saw was, for my level of expertise, a challenge. Lots of wrestling with the levels overall and picking out bits in small enough quantities that the changes didn't look like they'd been changed. I was pretty pleased with the way it turned out.

Bambi, I hadn't thought of "eerie" to describe it, though that's the effect I was after.

Thank you all for the compliments.

Great set, the roots definitely make an interesting subject. I think I like shot 1 the best because it holds it all in context.
