I started putting my lens caps and body caps in plastic bags to keep the dust off them. But I'm pretty sure this is a bad idea for the lens or body (especially in humid environments) if you are concerned about moisture. Maybe tossing a few (dozen ;)) bags of silica gel in there would help.

Anyway, how do you store your gear when you're not using it? Is removing an um... slightly heavy (19 oz) telephoto lens a good idea to protect the lens mount?

Ehm, in my camerabag. At home, it's just standing on a shelf in the studio. I see no harm in it just lying around. Just make sure it doesn't roll onto the floor... ;)

My stuff mainly stays in the camera bag all the time. When it is zipped closed dust is not a problem. I only use plastic bags when I am coming in from the cold to prevent condensation.

my stuff is generally all over the place. Some in a Tamrac bag I use for storage, in my LowePro backpack that I use all the time, in a Pelican case, in a drawer of my workbench, on the workbench, on a shelf, on my desk, on the coffee table. After a couple of decades it's used to it and so is my husband.

Are you saying this is how you store your husband as well or just your gear

Hmm, that's a good idea! How do you use plastic bags to prevent condensation? Sounds like you might bag everything in plastic with a few bags of silica before entering the house and allow it to sit for a few hours to warm up before opening. Does this sound right?

Yeah, that's about right. I've only had to do it when out shooting below zero. If you don't plan to use the camera right away and can leave it a few hours, you can forego the bag.
