I've seen them on geese, too, just haven't managed to get a photo.

All birds have them.

I have seen them on geese, perfect round white patches when their eyes are closed. I always figured it was to fool predators into thinking they're awake but that's just my guess :)

Don't they have an inner protective eyelid? I gotta go google this.

These are the patches I'm referring to. It kind of makes them look awake when they sleep:)

Wonder why people are having trouble seeing the photos from Micahel? I'm not.

It can be slow loading for me too MA and as usual my web host people are sleeping or hunting for eggs. The images show up but sometimes it takes a while. If it keeps up I'll be dumping "host Papa" and go back to POWWEB!

Hope Quiet One didn't mind me slipping that image in the thread, just trying to show the eye lids was all

Sorry, Michael, but I tried three browsers and my Blackberry and nothing.

QuietOne, birds are cool, huh? The more you photograph them, the more stuff you start to know about them. OK, I live with a couple of birds so I am prejusticed. :)

It's OK Jas...I put your refund check in the mail :D

I did manage to get hold of a janitor or something at Host Papa and I was told they are doing maintenance, I should call back tomorrow:confused:

No, I don't mind, Michael. For one thing, you have a longer "reach" than I do (I want a longer lens, waaaah!). Your explanation is as good as anything - wouldn't be surprised if biologists argue over the reasons for the white.

JAS, I'm fascinated by the stuff I see along the path. I'm easily distracted by something neat, and pretty often don't get to my intended destination. I've got a couple of bird books, and I often take really lousy pictures, just to be able to look the birds up when I get home. I'd look up the trees, plants, whatever, too, if I had references - books are sometimes easier for that than google.

Or you could all just say I'm easily amused.

Don't fret...That image was from back in my four thirds days with Olympus where my 300mm lens was jumped up to 600mm just by sensor size. With the D90 I'm at 450mm with the 300mm but once you've been to six....Waaaah!

I have no issues seeing them either

Birds are fascinating creatures.
