See page 40, Practical Photography April Edition. They used a 50mm lens wide open at f/1.4.
This is taken with a 35mm lens wide open at f/1.8.

Thanks, Bambi! I saw the original photo and thought, hey I have those same clothespins! I am going to try that! Lol. I could not get quite the same extent of defocus though.

Nice play here with an interesting simple subject. You say you are comparing yours to theirs. You might want to take a look at the online DOF calculator - Online Depth of Field Calculator (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html)
What you'll see is that they are more out of focus because maybe they were closer to the subject or maybe they have a different camera - full frame vs crop sensor for example. There's more than just the f-stop involved in DOF which is something I've known for a long time but am only now starting to fully appreciate.

I focused as closely as I could while still keeping all elements in the photo. It is probably a case of spacing of the clothespins. (They are surprisingly close together)
By the way, I have not seen any announcement about it and no one has mentioned it in any thread I have read, but I noticed a few days ago that you had moderator title now, Iggy! Congrats!

Thanks. I'm just helping Marko keep the SPAM at bay. I hope that's the only role I have to perform on this friendly and excellent board. :)
