When I was about 17 -18 I worked with a boy with autism at a daycamp. my job was to integrate/facillitate his ability to play and do activities in with the other kids in camp. It was so interesting to watch him interact and the kids were so good with him. When there were things he couldn't do (he absolutely had a complete melt down on the canoe dock during our first canoe time so we decided that would not be a good thing to do) I would let him have his own time to himself. He and I would go to a quiet area of the camp and I would just let him do his own thing for 30 minutes.. on his own/our own time. It was so interesting to watch him interact in his own world. He loved doing arts and crafts too and jumping on the trampoline.
The nicest thing was that at the end of his time there (2 weeks) his Mum told me that she had seen an improvement in him with others due to his socialization with the other children at camp.
That was a great time and one of the key things that made me decide to change careers...remembering that time with him and others similar episodes working/interacting and facilitating activities with kids with CP, Down's syndrome, hearing impairments etc. into daycamps....cool stuff. :) Brought back some cool memories for me watching that essay. :o
