May 2010 - Photography assignment - Vintage

I know it's early but I thought I would throw it out there:

Ideas anyone?

Beginnings and Endings -up to you to define what either of those are.
Depth of field (shallow or deep) and bokeh
Minimalism
Reflections
transportation modes - if it gets you there it gets you in here!
Slow/fast shutter speeds - play with your shutter.

That's all I got...lol.

April showers bring May flowers...or is everyone sick of flower shots? I know that I am not yet.

In Canada May brings us Victoria Day. Maybe something "Victorian"? Architecture, furniture, someone named Victoria?

I like all of these ideas. Another one that's been percolating in my brain is photos that show off your area. Ones the could be in a tourism magazine or ones that show the darker side of your area.

Flowers is a good idea but I don't want to do seasons as we have people who's seasons are opposite to us.

Well, architectural fragments but I do that all the time anyway, so why not portraits in landscape or horizontal orientation? That is something that you have to ask for. (May I?) Plus portraiture is very challenging.

I think that in honour of our own Greg Nuspl turning 50 we should do a 'vintage' theme. It could be done either via treatment or subject matter.

There is lots to play with from bubbles, reflections, dynamics of water in mid-air(sprinklers, or dogs shaking off water) to the different look of wet objects/scenes. Of course, we can also play with longer exposures, and lighting. Plus it might just be that excuse to get out on that rainy day :P

Thaks Marko...loving that fish eye...I was dissuaded from buying it from several sales people b/c they say it is kind of gimmicky but I like the distortion and I have used it quite a bit since getting it last week. The Tax Gods were especially kind to me this year. :D

Hey, Ernst. I suspect the image was > 1024 pixels or > 250KB. In either event the image is automatically resized by the board software and can get quite soft when that happens. Also, just a note - not a problem - but the idea of the assignment is to get out and shoot something during the assignment month. Leave this one here, it's an interesting image nonetheless but now the challenge is to find something vintage before the end of May :) Cheers.

- Iggy - I like your shot, and composition. it's sort of vintage because of the age of the building. Buuuut.....processing looks modern for the way this was shot.

Ernst-Ultich - I just love, love the feel here - Totally captures the vintage mood. There's no hard a fast rules for the assignment but most of us try to shoot something new as opposed to finding something old that fits. If you feel the creativity, of course please feel free to post again in this thread.

Yup uploading directly is totally fine but please keep the image under 250K or the forum software will compress the file which will affect sharpness. personally, I upload all my images at around 100-200k and have never had a problem.

Tried a technique out..only took me two hours to get it done..lol. Will try more once I get out shooting hopefully this weekend (if the rain would ever give)

So a shot from the kids at the fair a couple of days ago..tried to give it that..a polariod long faded from sitting in a box for decades look.. 2 hours seems way to long for what I ended up with though..

Both were done using Lightroom presets as a base and then playing with the sliders. They're actually the same river as well - the Souhegan, separated by 50 miles or so in totally different towns and taken months apart. Kinda weird.

I took this shot with this exact assignment in mind. You might recognize it as Casil's tub. My grandparents had one of these. We used to use it as kids to keep the pets we found: frogs, polywogs, and once, a turtle

Basingwerk Abbey was probably founded in 1131 by Ranulf, earl of Chester. Which should get it into vintage bracket.

The abbey has very little left and when I wanted to take images for art exam I realised there was not enough to cause enough interest so I decided to use the images but warp them to an extent where visitors would have a hard time to place where taken. I wanted to make it look like something from Disc World or Harry Potter.
There is a government web site here (http://www.castlewales.com/basing.html) which tells a little about the Abbey and I have already taken pictures of the other abbey talked about and when I look at my album on here it seems all the images from what I had considered for exam as "Structures in the landscape" would fall into vintage.

My father took this photo in old format 120 film. I can estimate the time frame because there are other pictures of me at about 8 years old. I scanned the negatives, did dust and scratch removal and added the frame. Vintage, yes. (There are no longer any grain elevators like these on the prairies.) Original, no.

This is a wonderful picture. I saw the picture on my desktop at first but later on I happened to be looking at the forum on my iPhone and noticed that there was a sepia background to it. But on my desktop in Firefox, the background is completely white and blends into the page, so I only see the wood fence and frame and the hill in the background. I checked in Google Chrome, where it is white as well, with no border visible to the picture. I far prefer this version. But in Safari on my desktop, the sepia, sort of noisy/grainy background is visible, right up to the borders of the photo. So I checked on my Macbook using Safari and Firefox. In both browsers on my Mac the sepia is present. Again it's much darker with the sepia tone. So I was wondering what you intended, and if this sort of difference in the way browsers render photos is common?

I'm not sure about the browser differences so maybe someone else could answer that. What I was going for was kind of the sepia old wild west type cowboy photo that I have seen many times. I thought the subject matter would work as that kind of shot and the weather might help contribute to the look of it. I think I got the look I was going for....thank you for the kind comments. :)

Today I went into Lunenburg at 9:30 just to get a few shots of the Picton Castle before she shipped out at 2 PM. When I got there horror of horrors she had already slipped away from the wharf. I almost panicked as there were not parking spots to be had. O raced down the the Railway Wharf, parked my car illegally and sprinted down the length of the wharf. Let me tell you sprinting is no easy feat for me. I snapped off one. The I optimized my setting and snapped off three more. She was under steam and would not be in full sail until she cleared the bay, much to far off to photograph. I know this as I did follow the Castle for the next half hour.


The day was mushy, sort of dark dreary and cold and the light was the pits. I left it on Aperture priority, composed and let Nikon do its thing for exposure.


Because she will be gone for a year I decided to do three processing of the same image. The first was an HDR colour version. Because I am shooting in 14 bit there is lot of latitude in a single exposure and allows for this pseudo HDR. The second image I decided to make it all dark and moody. The final process was to treat it as a very old image and strip all but the blue light form the image to create an orthochromatic look I then bleached the image to create that old faded look. Finally I Added a texture to create the feel that the image had weathered over the years.

OK, they're sepia toned family photos. A few years ago my sister gathered most of the photos the extended family had and sent them to me to scan and clean them up. Dad was a really late surprise, so some of the photos go back to the late 1890s. Haven't had time to dig vintage stuff I own out and photograph it. (I must be nuts, a couple of years before the photo scanning project, I scanned nearly 50 years of Grandma Young's diaries!)

Grandma Young's graduation picture from Normal School (what they called teacher's colleges back then) in 1906.

Grandpa Young's graduation from the Army - don't know if it was the equivalent of basic training or something more. The picture was taken in 1908.

Great-grandparents Hummel, Grandma Young's parents. Mid-1920s, can't date it any closer than that. It might have been a portrait for their golden wedding anniversary. In those times, a woman especially stayed married, no matter what the circumstances, but they look genuinely happy, so maybe they were among the lucky ones.

This is a 1959 Cox .049 Flying Tiger. It's a gas powered plastic flying model, meant to fly on strings in a circle. Mike has had this model for 7 years. It has never been started or flown. There was one decal missing. It took 7 years to find the correct replacement. The Flying Tiger designation stopped being used for these models because Disney assigned the copyright to a movie maker.

I liked the vintage theme, but it took a while to find something vintage. "Thems" is my shoes and my piano music - so they certainly count as vintage by age, if not by looks.

Vintage bone china set of dishes we inherited several years ago. Circa 1920s. Tea cup and saucer are nearly translucent and very reflective.
We don't use them very often and don't put them in the dishwasher when we do. Mike
