In order to save server space and reduce the time it takes to load a page, you must note that there are limits to how large the file can be (usually 275k) and if your file is too large you have to resize it (make it smaller). There are also limits as to the dimensions of a file and they are 1024x1024 pixels but this is rarely a problem. If the filesize exceeds 250k then software compresses it and the image doesn't look its best.
You need a graphics program to do this and many computers come pre-loaded with graphics programs. If you need one though, you can get a good free one at irfanview.com (http://www.irfanview.com) or Gimp.org (http://www.gimp.org)
Please know that 275k is more than enough to upload a great picture. As you can see by the images posted so far, and this attachment below, the maximum file size and image dimension sizes are more than adequate.
