I'd like to suggest "panning" as an idea for August.

Anyone interested in that idea?

Thanks!
Marko

geesh.... your a bookworm.... i'm still thinking about what to submit for July's.... guess i better hurry...

but for august... panning sounds great to me.... it's a skill i could certainly use some practice with...

i think before the summer/fall ends we should have a landscape one as well... maybe we should make them every second week until winter...

I think that lighting tends to be too bright in the summer to do panning without ND filters which a lot of photographers don't have. I would save that theme for the fall or spring.

I would suggest something general such as dawn, dusk, interesting lighting, water, flowers, pets, kids, etc.

i have never attempted 'panning', and have a very slight grasp on the idea. i'd frankly suck at it im sure! :p i'll give it a whirl if more people are up for it, but maybe a water theme would be simpler...? and you could do a podcast on panning before that assignment then!

im with travis on the bi-weekly idea... we seem to be keeping up with the monthly theme and i know im itching for a new assignment before the end of the month!

Hmmm.... not much on the water shots I'm afraid; could we do something with sand? I've got lottttttttttsssssssssssss of sand around here.

If more people want to try 2x a month, let's do it - I'm game too.

In terms of other ideas for august -
:lightbulbWhat about an object?
Beer is popular in the summertime.
How about 'Beer'. Many ways to get creative...

mmmm..... beeeeer..... for educational purposes.... i like...

It doesn't have to be a 'product shot' either, but if it's the theme, beer should at least be seen in the shot in some way...

I'll choose the topic based on the majority's support on August 1 - so speak now please :D.

Thx!
Marko

beer! beer! thats a fun summer theme!

I vote for pannnnnning. Have been practicing since long.
No good shot till now though

Seems like the topic that has the most support is "Beer"

So the assignment for the next 2 weeks is Beer. Shoot it any way you want, in any style, but Beer should figure prominently in the shot.

Enjoy and Cheers!

Holy smokes.... product photography can be time consuming.... I spent three hours and 500 cycles with my macro 105mm, a few bottles of beer and a turkey baster in order to get a decent droplet shot.... just couldn't make it happen and had to call it quits because the sun was just pounding on me... oh well hopefully I'll have one before the two weeks is up... meanwhile an attempt at vintage product shot..

oops... that one turned out a little big..... i tried to edit with a smaller replacement but didn't see any option to remove the original photo... sorry..

hey nice shot Travis!

I think this is well done and no worries on the size. My main comment would be that the bottle could use some breathing room on the top and bottom...but i like the vintage feel and browy old time colours.

There's obviously quite a bit of post processing here - care to share what you did?

Thanks!

thanks Marko... but honestly.... I don't think my PP techiques should be studied in the forum at any great length.... lol.... but for any of those who enjoy watching a car wreck...

-the shot was a six exposure HDR with a white towel as the back drop
-changed background to black
-added noise
-converted to black and white film
-messed around with contrast
-finally step was to use a pspx2 processing effect called Albumen which was a developing method used in the 1890's....

so as you can see.... not much to learn here....

Hmmm beer eh, I drink like 1 or 2 Guinness and 3 or 4 glasses of ice wine with a good cigar in a year, found I never cared for alcohol, I have enough other bad habits, drinking was just not one of those things I really ever done. This will be a challenging one for me, hmmmm...... well I best get my thinking cap on.

PS: Very cool shot, that photo just work well.

Like it, agree it needs a little more room top and bottom, but other than that, good.

Thanks for sharing Travis! - Even though for you this shot was cake, there will be many people that will appreciate knowing how to get the 'look' in this shot.

Well, so far we are all connaisseurs of unique "beers" and Travis likes his in sepia, I like mine in colour and you like yours in black and white. :D:);) No one so far seems to be into the cliché common Canadian beers.

Is there some "hidden" significant meaning here?

Well three are useless to drink at least. :)

BTW I like the lighting and texture on the background.

haha... way to go Marko..... that could be dangerous late at night.... you could end up taking a swigg of Angel instead of Corona...

No chance of that travis - only if I were unconscious could I make that mistake...and being unconscious won't allow me to make it :p
