View Full Version : June 2010 - Photography assignment - Motion (in motion or stopped in action)

05-27-2010, 07:00 PM
Anybody...now is the time to get your thinking caps on...
My suggestions
Repeating patterns or symmetry
Motion - either in motion or stopped in action
Beginnings and Endings - your definitions of
I think there was a suggestion recently in a past assignment idea of "yellow" which would be interesting also. :)

I've been looking for an excuse to do some night photography.

we had night a few months ago.

But I like any of the ideas. Another idea I had is the '20 steps concept'. you take a photo within 20 steps of your door.

we had night a few months ago.

But I like any of the ideas. Another idea I had is the '20 steps concept'. you take a photo within 20 steps of your door.

Front door or back door? Or which door? Indoor or outdoor?

I'm pretty much happy with anything, I love being challenged to workout how to capture things I wouldn't normally think about photographing.

Ummm some ideas:

Food - Everyone loves food right...
Sound - Capture sound visually.
Emotion - Portray an emotion in an image.
Beautiful Blur - where a Blurred element is essential to the image.
How we live - Capture the way we live in 2010
Self Portrait - Ok not everyone might be up for this one???
Grunge - the state of being covered with unclean things

Sound - Capture sound visually.
How we live - Capture the way we live in 2010

I'm up for one of those 2 suggestions, actually the second one will get my vote, because it's more like street photography.

Beautiful blur is neat and motion can also be added to the category. I am also up for capturing emotion or even mood as that can be a wide interpretation also. Nice ideas Richard. :)

Wow - many good ideas here early on.... as always the theme with the most support becomes the theme.

Of these suggestions - I'm into...
- Beginnings and/or endings
- Yellow
- Emotion - Portray an emotion in an image.
- Motion - either in motion or stopped in action
- 20 steps from your door

As I said, I'm good with motion or emotion.

Hmm..don't know how this would go but what if we have a list of "masters" to choose from..then people can do their own homework on their master or choice. And then after your little studying try to create a "masterpiece" of your own through your "master" studies?

Hmm..sounds kinda silly in a way I guess.

motion or emotion.. :)

Motion sounds really cool... have we done motion yet?

Going through past assignments it seems we have never done motion before as an assignment. :)

I like the idea of motion and of 20 steps. For the 20 steps, that could include any door, even an interior one. Might bring out some subjects not otherwise considered.

I thought Kat's idea was really cool. Doing some studying about a master photographer and then flattering him/her by imitation.
Motion sounds good to me too. http://www.photography.ca/Forums/images/smilies/twocents.gif

Oh, I missed that one that Kat suggested about the "Masters." I think that would be a good idea sooner or later. After all learning from someone you admire by imitating them can help you develop your own style, I think.

Blur sounds like fun. Haven't done that on purpose anyway. Gale

Hi members - I'll try to make the assignment official later today or first thing tomorrow morning - sorry for the delay.

06-01-2010, 05:20 PM
Ok everyone - suggestions are merged and the theme with the most support seems to be motion.

Ok then...who is going first!

Thx for all the wonderful suggestions! :goodvibes

06-01-2010, 08:10 PM
Ok I took this on Saturday in anticipation of this being the assignment this month:

Tulip blur....

06-01-2010, 09:16 PM
Well..my motions stopped (well..twisted to make the theme work) Till I have time to play with shutter speed!

06-01-2010, 10:34 PM

Here's my take: Belle's wake as she goes after a stick.

06-02-2010, 03:36 PM
Ha ha. My attempt of movement and light and..I don't know..lol

06-02-2010, 08:10 PM

Planned this one out and I think I got pretty close to what I had in my head.

06-02-2010, 10:44 PM
I've been away for awhile. Now I'm back in taking pictures.

This is an overlay.

06-03-2010, 12:00 PM
Nice stop motion adispi - like the dust trails under the horse's feet
bambi - way cool - Love the shapness of the water wake:highfive:
kat - Nice play - I see the motion
Iggy - This is EXCELLENT! :highfive:My only niggle is the crop through the fingers.
QuisutDeus - wonderful play here and nice composition as well!

06-03-2010, 02:37 PM
Iggy - This is EXCELLENT! :highfive:My only niggle is the crop through the fingers.

Thanks. I agree completely with your niggle - it ticked me off when I sat down to process. When you are working with your 11 year old son, however, you take what you can get ;)

My sons toy car rolling across the dining table.

06-04-2010, 02:06 AM
Awesome. Love it!

Cheers Iggy,

This is my third attempt at this months assignment, my first 2 ideas ended up up in the recycle bin...:headslap:

Here are two of my shots on this theme. One is obvious, the other one waas done while paning the camera with slow shutter speed. Open for critiques, of course, and encouraged.

only thing moviing here is my camera ....

06-05-2010, 11:51 PM
Up the hill, down the hill, across the parking lot and...safe in the bushes.

06-06-2010, 12:45 AM
One of the 2 new fountains in the park across the street from my place...they put on a nifty light show at night.

06-06-2010, 03:58 AM
Out testing different camera settings, I saw a bird on a tree top. Just as I clicked another bird landed on the first bird (or so it looks). Although the settings aren't what they should be, I kind of like the look of this. You can see the top bird's wings still fluttering and it looks as if "he" is giving the other bird a kiss.

caught this from our front door

What a cool assignment topic. It has really bought out some excellent shots from you lot. Not a boring one in there!!

06-06-2010, 09:30 PM
Another venture into floral abstracts:

06-06-2010, 09:41 PM
And another shot of the Memorial Park fountain light show...it is pretty lovely to watch...

06-06-2010, 09:45 PM
I did this by calling the dogs and then moving the lens back as they ran. It reminds me of one of Jimmy's shots (but not as cool). Anyway, I'm posting it as part of my foray into the assignment.

06-06-2010, 11:08 PM
Wow Bambi, that is cool - made my head spin.

06-07-2010, 12:24 AM
The wading pool at Olympic Plaza. It looks snowy but that's water from the fountains. :)

I called it Time and Space.

06-08-2010, 06:02 PM
Had my camera out and ready as I was heading to the bus stop on the way home today. Lucky for me this family drove by. Also lucky for me I got off more than one shot due to traffic. You can find my other one here (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f21/generation-vespa-9973.html#post70071).

06-09-2010, 02:36 PM
I was the last one to leave the building at the end of a long day. Was just going to close my car door when I glanced to my right and saw this running away from me....

06-09-2010, 05:38 PM

Niagra falls, im motion.

06-09-2010, 08:51 PM

06-11-2010, 01:02 AM
I like the seagull, Marko. There seems to be a bottle in that one as well. And some other mysterious things.

06-11-2010, 02:07 AM
Also found on my http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f22/caldwell-air-show-10000.html thread. Race participants Reed Rocket and Corvette.

06-12-2010, 12:29 AM
Raining again yesterday. I was trying out spot metering with the sky behind the subject.

06-12-2010, 09:42 PM
Our yellow lab loves the water but usually during baths the bather gets a bath also.

06-13-2010, 12:10 AM
I finally did it...set up the camera, tripod and remote to capture our furry visitors. I thought these shots just might be okay for this assignment.

06-13-2010, 12:25 AM
One more...just couldn't resist posting this one...I promise...no more :)

06-13-2010, 08:07 AM

That first one of yours looks like the surf is going to come down on the two boarders. It is pretty cool looking as well as the second, M.A.

That border was actually right under that wave and got soaked ... several times. The other person is a friend of ours, she was further up the rocks with a camera also and safely out of the way.

06-15-2010, 06:13 AM
That's well done Indy!!

06-15-2010, 11:33 AM
I like the mood of the first one, MA. The one surfer with a posture of taking on the ocean, win or lose.

Well up from the eddy near by. I'm beginning to wonder if we'll have a float season this year.

Almost a monochrome in shades of blue. Nice lunch hour find.

Thank you, QuietOne. :)

06-20-2010, 07:20 PM

06-20-2010, 08:23 PM

my nephew and his friend were talking about going on the trampoline. they were kind enough to let me take many pictures :)

A jelly bean bike! I used to see a lot of those on Highway 17 through the Santa Cruz mountains. Some had more sense than others.

06-26-2010, 11:43 PM
I visited with my sister an agility tournament for dogs. The dogs were mostly too fast for my camera - too much motion ;-):

06-27-2010, 10:00 PM
I saw this young man climb a tree at the lake with the rope and of course I grabbed my camera. I then thought-'oh this will be perfect for the assignment' as I took it. :) What has happened to me???

the water felt fine-once I got in. Most definitely under 20 degrees. ;)

06-27-2010, 10:40 PM
Bambi wonderful series of shots captures the idea of a hot day and cooling off the best way you can.

06-28-2010, 01:37 AM

06-28-2010, 11:33 AM
Saw this one yesterday...

06-28-2010, 08:11 PM
I have one more :0

06-29-2010, 09:57 PM
Found this plowing through the harbour this afternoon while I was out for a photowalk.

06-30-2010, 12:27 AM
Camera movement here;

06-30-2010, 01:26 AM
Q1- that looks dangerous!

It's an activity that requires strict attention to procedure. After that, Mike says the biggest danger is that it will roll away from you and find the most expensive airplane in the vicinity to chew its way through. :headslap:

I totally forgot about this one I took in California -

yeah, I wound up with wet feet, but they were bare and I didn't mind. Nothing makes you feel like you're 5 years old like trying to dodge the surf.

07-22-2010, 08:28 PM
This is a firs post for me! Caught this little dragonfly just about to land.
