Quite literally. Last night, as I was walking home from work, and this was at about 11:00 p.m. I heard the sudden screaming and cawing of a raven. It was madly circling a tree that was about a block away. It was raising a real ruckus. Now, admittedly ravens can be loud, but this was late at night when they normally roost, and this bird was obviously frantic. I continue walking towards the tree, trying to see what had caused so much distress for the bird. I couldn't even think what could have happened really. Then I saw it - a huge shadowy figure sitting in the tree about 10 or 15 feet up. It was amazing! I walked closer. Yes, my suspicions were confirmed. An owl! An owl sitting in a tree in front of an apartment block preying on ravens (possibly) I secretly hoped it would catch a squirrel or two. I just stood and stared at it for the longest time. It was completely nonplussed by my presence, looking around calmly, unaware of the awkward circumstances of its visit to urbanity. I wished there was someone out and about and I could have pointed to it and said, look an owl, what an awesome creature! But no. It was just a shared moment between me, the owl and the raven. And a special one. A brush with nature in the concrete jungle.
