It's not an expensive lens, but it is still a good quality lens.
Very sharp for a zoom, nice color, etc. You can definitely find a better lens, but not for anywhere near the price. When I bought my D90, I got another 18-55 instead of the 18-105 - not because of price, but because it's a great lens.

Wait till you see a couple of shot Chantelle took with her cheap 18-55mm yesterday at Cedar Creek ... her with her Rebel XTi and me with a Canon 40D ... and she slaughtered me! I've only seen three of her shots and they ALL better than I did! I was looking ... but not seeing
In my defense ... I've been to that spot often and was there more for her than me ... perhaps that's not defense ... but more stupidity. In any case ... cheap camera and lens and a years experience versus pro level gear and many years experience and I got my ass whipped and handed to me in a ribbon!

Great gear just makes it's easier at times ... it doesn't necessarily produce better photos ... the photographer does that!

    Amen!

A good photographer can make a great capture with a Box Brownie. A poor photographer isn't likely to make a great capture with the best gear!

She's learnt so much about composition by being restricted with the P&S that I think she'll so be showing us what she really can do in no time!
