Fonts in GIMP

Can someone explain to me how to add fonts in GIMP? I looked at their help and did as they said but it didn't do anything

I'm not that familiar with Gimp but a quick google search yielded this video. and web page

In a nutshell it looks like you have to download fonts and install them if you don't already have them.
