Since you mentioned the subject, I’ll post one I created today after leaving a location I’ve always wanted to shoot. It’s in Augusta, GA at the old Sacred Hearts Cathedral.

TT I have not tried HDR yet, I'm flat out dealing with DR! Though SOME of the HDR photos I have seen have been very impressive. It is on my list to try.

In fact it was Marko's podcast interview with Joseph Cartright (podcast 59) that really got me interested, and then I headed across to this forum -thanks Marko

I think he recommends Photomatix. I gave it a try along with some of the other programs out there. There’s only a handful of them solely dedicated to creating HDR images. My version of PS 7 wasn’t able to do it either. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think those with versions later than 7 have the ability to tone map the “merged” images created in that program.

When I found the free app called “Picturenaut”, I stopped looking for anything else. It’s fast, simple to use, and produces the types of results I’m interested in. Creating a HDR image from a single exposure gives if fits, but that’s not really HDR anyway, so I can overlook that.

BF-It is nice that you added that your version of PS is not compatable with the programs...Some where, I read which ones are, but for our purposes here, it is nice to quickly read.....Yes, you are correct, he does use Photomatix and Lucis - and another noise reduction product... Pretty pricey for the average Joe.

GregL- I have not yet done any HDR .... ever since Marko's podcast on it I have been totally enamored with the process and am chomping at the bit to do so... In fact, my photographic goal this year is to hit many of the old churches here and do a series on the awesome exterior,and more specifically, interior architecture, donate a dvd to them as a thank you. This project is what I had in mind for the HDR... I will check out the resources you offered and appreciate that you linked!

BF-Son works at the gov. facility located near him - since he is further out with both living and employment does not feel the impact like the true locals do..when he lived in Augusta, he said that he could easily rent out his home for the week and make a tidy little sum. But, has never done so.

I don’t know if I understood you correctly, but it sounds like you’re trying to use Picturnaut and PS together. If so, that won’t work as Picturnaut is a stand alone program that needs no help from another program to do its thing. Find the Picturenaut folder that you downloaded and do this.

Picturenaut folder>bin>picturenaut (it’s the little duck icon)

Double click the duck, and the program opens. From the file menu, click on “Generate HDRI. When the dialogue box open, click on “add” to navigate to the images on your drive that you want to use for the HDR image. Bear in mind that you need to use at least two images to create one true HDR image. It’s best if they are all at the same f/stop. The exposure time is what counts and if the images were exposed with shutter speed that are really, really close the program may kick your choices out. If the images you try to use weren’t shot with the benefit of a tripod, you may have some trouble with alignment, but that’s the same with all HDR programs.

Once you’ve “added” your images, click “OK”. Watch the progress at the bottom to see what kinds of shifts were made in the alignment stage. Ideally, there will be no shifts made to align the images, but anything up to a 20-25 usually produces a fair image. It’s when you have shifts of over 55-65 that you won’t be satisfied with the results.

After the image is created, I normally go to “View” and size the image to “Fit image to view” and then the fun starts.

On the menu bar go to Image>Tone Mapping>Adaptive Logarithmic and play with the sliders. Just try to keep the histogram well proportioned for your best results. Usually, I just leave the four sliders to the left alone and just make two simple moves by sliding the arrows on each side of the histogram to where they coincide with the base of the histogram at each side. If you get this far, you’ll learn a lot of other neat thing on your own just by playing around with the controls.
