Got a trip to Europe planned to visit family, in about a month. I'm of course going to bring as much gear as will fit in my backpack- to carry it on the long flights- and I'm going to snap photos until my shutter finger falls off.
I had a big dilemma about how to store the photos I take. So I decided to splurge on a netbook. My rationale was it's about the same price as these Epson portable viewers but the screen is bigger, the hard drive is bigger (160GB), it has a built in webcam, can do internet surfing and emails, and can run photo viewing/editing software... Seemed like a no brainer. Also, I might have access to a CD burner there. So for the trip home with my precious images, I'm thinking netbook and as backup maybe put some of the best culled shots back onto my memory cards (I will have about 30 Gigs total) and CDs for the trip home. Maybe I'll put the CDs in the luggage so it's not all in the same place- or even leave the CDs there just as a last resort backup - they can always mail them to me if I need them later.
Any thoughts?

When I travel, I use a portable external hd instead of using cds. I find it less cumbersome. I still have the pics backed up in 3 places- memory cards, laptop, and ext hd. Then when traveling, each is in a diferent bag for those worst case scenarios where one bag goes missing.
I also considered buying an attachment for my ipod that lets me download pics from an sd card directly to the ipod for viewing and storing. Since I usually bring my ipod, it seemed convient. But since I bring my laptop most of the time, this was unnecessary. It was around $60US, but you'd have to already have a ipod, prefferably one with higher capacity and free space.

Where does your Username, "F8&Bthere" originate? I know I've read it somewhere before but cannot recall the origin. Thanks. PS. I think all the bases are covered in the answers to your question.
I can answer that, I think. It is a motto of the old time news reporters. They set there cameras at f8 and were there ready to catch the shots of all kinds of news events. f8 because it was an all purpose setting that would pretty much let them get a picture no matter what with their B&W film that had quite a bit of lattitude.
