Any tips and advice on what to bring when doing travel photography?

Depends on where you're going. If you're going on safari, bring your biggest telelens. If going to a forest, bring a tripod and a wide angle lens. If going to a city, bring a nice 50mm etc.

I can think of tons of tips. If I were to give only one it'd be this:

Don't forget to enjoy your holiday. Taking nice pictures is good fun, but enjoy the rest as well. Leave your camera in your bag sometimes. Listen to the people there, enjoy the local food, relax at the pool, spend time with the people that came along with you, etc etc. You're on holiday, not on a photo assignment...

One note. If you are vacationing with the family and plan to take photos while on vacation, forget it. The family won't have the patience for it

My tip..and just gave it to my brother of to Jamaica..if you are somewhere sunny like that..use your flash for people photos. (fill light)

With that bright sun most of mine, before I knew this, had everyone all dark in it.

I actually see more on a trip when I take my camera because I am looking for good shots.
And, when I get home I have some memories that I do not forget.
I shoot Sports Events with two Nikon D3 cameras but my travel camera needs to be small and light,
especially when I take it by itself on hikes.

My travel kit fits in it's own carry on bag.

D90 with Black Rapid Strap
Nikkor 12-24
Nikkor 18-200 (usually on camera all the time).
Nikkor 70-300 VR
N-AF 1.5X TELEPLUS MC DG KENKO
two extra 16gb SDHC cards
portable charger and three batteries

to steal a quote by a photographer much more competent then I "the best camera is the one you have with you" I know when i was shopping for my slr i could have afforded a new d90 or the then discountinued and discounted d300 for around the same price. I choose the d90 because when i travel I want something thats light as possible, and the crop is lovely and allows you to use shorter (lighter) lenses. If you have one, bring a nice litttle crop body, just my two cents.
