This brings up a great discussion point... I think I'll start a new thread though....

Actually, since I see this is in the critique thread I'll just continue here about this particular image. I didn't realize this was the critique thread to start so I hadn't actually provided any critique. My critique for this shot, and others may disagree, is that it's perfect the way it is. She's laying down so you expect there to be a light above her and a little shadow below next to the pillow. If it was "perfectly lit" it wouldn't be real to me. With this light, I feel more like I'm actually there. Her forward eye seems to be in excellent focus. The expression is the definition of precious.

I think some times we get so caught up in trying to make each aspect "pefect", whatever that means, that we overlook a natural and wonderful photograph. Tiger, print this one, at least 8x10 and put it in a frame and put it on the wall. That's what I would do if it were my daughter.

Don't get me wrong. If you are doing a photo shoot for Vogue or Cosmopolitan you need to be picky with the light and make it just perfect - again, whatever that means as it really depends on your vision for the image.

yup. top one. :-) both are super cute tho. if you are missing the catch lights in the eyes, add them in with a reflector or other light source.

I like these AT. In shot 1 and 2 you can see detail in the Iris.
This is what you are looking for in portraits (generally) and this can only be achieved when there is enough light. Look for this before you press the shutter in future portraits and you'll be surprised at the huge difference it will make. Hope that helps.

I have to agree with Iggy. Shadows and light can make or break an image. I'm never afraid to add some shadow. It can really put a feeling to a photo you wouldn't get otherwise. Although I may be biased in that as I really don't use my flash often. Not very wise on it and just never had the time to start picking it up.

In all reality. Photography of your kids is all about what that photo brings for you. Strangers won't get that same feeling.

The expressions really make these images. Reminds me of a saying I heard. "Expression" over "Perfection"
