How close was the camera and did you do anything to protect the lens?

The welding bay is in the corner of the shop floor, I used a speedlight mounted on a tripod off camera with a cheap ebay diffuser to add to the ambient lighting. I then hand held the camera so I could move about a bit. If I had thought things through I should have used live view, but no used the view finder instead. I think I must have been 3-4 metres away with a 55-250mm lens. I got ask the welder to try and direct the sparks away from the camera.

Not to much thought given to health and safety...

Artistically the 1st shot is definitely superior! From a strictly technical point of view maybe the 2nd shows the skill of the welder better and isn't the the goal of the photo's to show technical expertise and sell the shop's product?
