my camera(s) only take Compact Flash cards which is not used as much as SD which is a smaller physical size, but both come in the same capacities. I think 64gb is the largest, but I use 8gb cards. I don't know the technical or performance differences, but I sort of wish I had the option to use both since SDs are easier to find in a pinch. But with 4 cards on hand, I don't think that pinch will ever come.

Compact flash cards were able write and process data at a faster rate then SD cards but I believe that the SD cards are catching up! My D300 uses only the flashcard. I think with the D300s you can record to both simultaneously or put jpegs on the sd while you put nef files on the compactflash although I could be wrong about the last thing. Not all SD cards are created equal some are much slower then others so basically if you are using your cameras maximum speed 6 or 7 frames per second or whatever it is you need a card that can process that info quickly. I am just kind of rambling here but that is the gist of it.
