I recently was given access to a DSLR and am just learning how to it. Any guidance both technically and artistically will be greatly appreciated.

From both a technical and compositional standpoint, nothing in the foreground of a photo should be blurred or out-of-focus because it distracts the viewer's attention from the centre of interestn.

Further problem with this one is related to composition or the artistic part. In a "crowd" scene and that means people, flowers or even leaves in this case it is necessary to have a centre of interest and that means isolating one particular leaf or perhaps the shape created by a few leaves to act as the focus of attention for the eye of the viewer. This shot is missing that necessary element.

I agree with tegan here for the most part, though I do like the colours in this shot.

If the whole shot was blurrier then maybe it would be 'abstract' enough to hold its own and I think in this case you are 65-70% there.....

There is a general standard in composition that the centre of interest should be in sharp focus. Blurred abstract photos with no centre of interest are never successful even as art.
