What to do???

Well today me and my wife were going to leave early this morning and take the back roads to Fort Erie so I could get some night time shots of the Buffalo Skyline, usually our road trip/taking photo days last 14 - 16 hours. So now I have to stay home because a client needs to rerecord some guitar tracks so that will take an hour and now I am have nothing to do and today was the perfect cloud cover that I wanted. I have been doing a lot of post processing and sorting of photos and bored of it, was so looking to my road trip.

So this leads me to the reason of this post. When you take photos do you make a day of it or do you just do an hour or two here and there? Almost anytime I plan on doing photo shoots it is at least a 10 hour day, except when I shoot concerts, even some them are that long.

If you shoot outdoors do you wait for it to be warm enough or are you like me and if the look outside is right it can be -30c and you just dress for the weather and go out anyway, same as in the summer it could be low 40's c with the humidex if the skies look right I am out for the day. My wife thinks I am nuts on the cold days but I always come back with "See babe, I am willing to suffer for my art" lol ......

Sounds like you have a recording studio? I would start in there, with tripod and some longer exposures, I know the light is not great in there, my brother has one as well. Lot of good shots in there, just have to take time doing it. Can take pictures while he is recording as well. Just a thought.

I have been at it for 25+ years, have more than enough studio photos, and I am not particular about this guitarist, thinks he is a Rock Star in the worse kind of way, he may be one doesn't mean I have to tolerate it lol, so I just want him in, tracks laid and him gone. And now when I am in the Studio I just work, its not like it used to be, I like a lot of the people I deal with but when they are in the studio my only concern is getting them the best sound I can.

You have hit upon a common theme with photographers and their mates.

Unless I'm out of town without my wife....I am always on a time restriction. I usually go out by myself for a few hours or schedule a shoot that will get me 4-6 hours.

I WISH I could shoot for 10 hours but it never happens (unless it's a business shoot like a wedding that actually takes that long or I'm out of town solo)

Even though you wish you had more time A.L., by the sound of things, you have a sweet deal going. My wife never wants to be around me when I photograph, UNLESS she is specifically helping me out, and then she is more than helpful.

If we are together and I see something of interest to shoot, she cringes if it takes me more than 5-10 minutes. That sucks because I can easily spend an hour or more even on something that appears to be mundane.

Ditto Marko. Same expereinces as you have had. Maybe you can get your wife to model? If experiences prove to be correct then that might be a no go, but it doesnt hurt to try.

If she models for me, NO problem and I'm quite lucky, she likes to model and she is quite photogenic.

I'm more talking about just strolling down the road and I see a stranger that is cool looking, or a fire hydrant or pattern of some kind...anything unplanned really....

Then, if it takes more than 5-10 minutes, I can feel her eyes rolling into the back of her brain.

Well my wife just likes going for the drive and she is like me and loves cruising along the rural roads of Ontario, where you see the unusual. Sometimes she doesn't come, I think she is glad to get rid of me for the day .

I gave her my Kodak Z710 and she likes to take photos now, but she only comes about half the times, sometimes I will head out a dusk and spend the night driving around to look for shots until dawn. My time out driving also has a lot to do with the cost of gas, my truck 4x4 with 5.7 L (345 ci) HEMI, Tuned out also, dynoed at 412 HP, with several performance upgrades, so I am like a an old school muscle head in some ways. So I can go anywhere in any weather, which I do.

My wife and I always go out driving during harsh blizzards, something we both enjoy.

Pretty much my story too. Got the wife into using the Sony Cybershot and started showing her a few more advanced techniques. Next thing I know my upgrade from the old Canon 400D to a Canon 40D became suddenly 2x Canon 40D's. Which I love anyway just couldn't find an excuse I was willing to put forward. Great when the wife thinks it's her idea

Well my what to do has become much more expansive than I had originally planned. A series of events made going anywhere this week impossible and I prefer to travel during the weekdays when everyones at work and Hotel Rooms are much Cheaper.

So sometime early Monday morning going to do a quick run to Quebec City, 8 to 9 hour drive, then spend the rest of that day and the night shooting the city. The next day check more of Old Quebec then head back to Toronto but a two night stay in Montreal so my wife and I can see the city, take some photos on our way back.

Tired of always heading west from Toronto, time to go east, been at least a year since I have been to Montreal and 2 for Quebec City should be a fun time. How much photography time I get in will depend on the weather, but no matter what I want some photos. Thursday when we leave Montreal I will take all back roads to Toronto, what we call the Scenic Route.

Sounds like it should be a good trip. One of these days, when I get a job and free up some cash Ill be running around like you. Your wife will probably have fun as well. Enjoy yourself, can't wait to see some of the images.
