Nikolas Groot is an artist that lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design where he majored in Printmaking. He has also completed a diploma program in commercial photography at the Dawson Institute of Photography in Montreal, Quebec. He has exhibited extensively in Montreal and throughout Ontario, and most recently in Barcelona, Spain where his prints have been included in an internationally touring exhibit. Nikolas tries to blend both the photographic and the printmaking media to create juxtapositions that illustrate, challenge and critique the cultural and idealogical paradoxes of situation and displacement. As seen here in some of his recent work, his images explore issues of placelessness, histories and origins often reconstructed by imperialistic idealogies. They serve to portray the colonised mind within the context of a personal and unpolitical landscape.
