Shot the moon

Hi .... ok here goes...... I have a sonya200 with a 70-300mm f4-5.6 lens.

my question is ...How do I take a photo of the moon? when I tried it was on auto and the flash came on (obviously I dont need that lol )... So I have to start coming off the auto settings and taking the jump into the unknown:confused:...Do I use a long shutter speed?? do I use a tripod?? do I use a particular "f" setting????? HELPPPPPPP

Here is a link that explains it but basically, you expose for reflected light of the moon which is surprisingly bright. Long exposures with the moon in it can result in an overexposed moonscape and a warped looking moon if the exposure is long enough.

The moon's brightness usually stuffs people up. You can shoot it with surprizingly fast shutter speeds depending on the f-stop you use.

Definitely use a tripod Tony.

Try an f-stop around f8 as it's usually a safe bet for good clarity on most lenses

ISO at 100 or 200

Then experiment with the shutter speeds. You'll probably start around 100 and move up from there.

Better for the photo to be a tad dark and capture more detail then to be too bright and lose it.

I am just waiting for a nice moon now. Last night was a little overcast and it is a full moon so When (if) I get a good shot, I will post it to see what you think.

You can also check many online moon caledars to know when the moon will be full or what ever stage you want.

I did some moon shots last night, might post one later. f5.6, ISO100, around 1/400 gave me some nice light on my 70-300 Nikkor.
