This month's level 2 assignment is Light painting or light drawing. Loads of room for fun and creativity.

This example by theantiquetiger shows off light drawing or writing with sparklers or steel wool.

Nice start off!

Well, I guess I'll be the guinea pig and start this one off with a little fun I was having this morning actually. Just a little 5 minute set-up, a couple shots, and here are the results. Nothing dramatic, just some cool colours.

Nicely done, you got a nice spread of color here. Trying to figure out what they are. Are they drinking glasses?

Thank you Marko, and Realist. As for the question-Nope. ;)

Are they glass-like marbles or pieces? A friend of mine has a game called Pente that looks like it uses similar looking pieces.

Shoot, man. I don't know jack about light painting, but I figured I'd give this one a try. What do you think, Purple Haze?

Cool shot, Barefoot. It reminds me of my old Spirograph set! :)

Here's my take on the Light Painting Challenge.

Thanks Iggy and Marko. I wish I had taken the time to do the math. Seems to be the story of my life...I suffer from premature e-post-ulation. :wall-an:

You're welcome. I really don't get the math reference though.

I neglected to calculate the hyper-focal distance and, in a manner of speaking, took a shot in the dark. I missed. :headslap:

Ahhhh, I see. Honestly, I think that makes it better. It gives it a feeling of three dimensions rather than just a flat pattern like a spirograph.

I don't know, Ig. Set the distance to what the DOF calculator said it should be, but its softer on the outside than the inside now which looks to be the opposite of the first try to me. The distance from the light starts off greater when first set in motion than it is as it slows itself down. I think I like the first one I did best, but I'll show these two and then put the flashlight up.

Very cool submissions so far guys.

Here is my attempt. It isn't what I set out to do, but I am still kinda pleased with the end result

Cool results, runmonty, I can see why you liked it.

Barefoot, I wonder if it's a case of the light "bleeding" as the swing slows down? On the outside it's going faster and so the light is more of a solid streak but as it slows down it sits in one place "longer" and causes a little bit of bleeding? Either way, I still like 'em! :)

Likewise. It looks like you're surrounded by concertina wire. It'd make a cool avatar for you.

This is another from the same session, but this time I have applied a split toning effect in post.

Sorry if this is boring you.

This is an image that is part of a series of light painting images that made up a Valentines card that my son and I made for my wife last year. I had 2 flashes set up and then used a flash light with a red lens to make the heart. Its a little cheezy but my wife liked it (not to mention you can still see the remote in my hand).

I was experimenting with some steel wool for an image I want to do this winter on the ice.
