Hi members,

The level 2 photo assignment this month is 'Backlight ' and can be interpreted as you see fit .

Okay then who will post first in this thread?
(July 2015 regular assignment is here (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/photo-assignments/23364-july-2015-photography-assignment-low-light.html))
Thx!

Early morning sunlight backlights this little guy as he tends to his web.

Agreed

Loving these so far.

MB do you have photoshop or only LR. I like the colour but the crepuscular rays in the B & W version is stunning. I think the silver efex processing applied as a luminosity layer over the colour version would be spectacular.

Thanks RM. I do have Photoshop and I have a rather vague idea what you are suggesting. This exposure is part of a 5 shot bracket that I tried to blend in an HDR photo. It shows the rays, but there is too much ghosting in the trees and reflections. You can see my effort in my Flickr stream. If I have time, I'll try your suggestion on the weekend (read: if I'm not out Stampeding and/or shooting).

You're welcome. Just to clarify what I am suggesting.

I do like the colour in "Weaselhead looking West". Just make this the bottom layer. Then create a new Silver EFEX layer on top to bring out the rays (high levels of "structure") and then just change the blend mode of that layer to "Luminosity" instead of "normal". If you need to punch up the saturation (as it can get lost doing this process) just "stamp visible layer" and up the saturation on that layer.

Let me know if I haven't explained it well enough. I would love to see the results if you can drag yourself away from the stampede.

Gave RM's suggestion a shot. It combines the best of both versions smartly. Thanks.

I captured this image of Julian Priester when he was playing at the Bus Stop Theatre in Halifax for the Halifax Jazz Festival.... seems to fill the requirement of back lighting.

This is a great collection for this months assignment. Well done to all (unlike me being a non-contributing slacker this month)

Okay, so it's technically August, but this was shot a week ago. I've been AWOL for a bit, but have been working on new portraiture skills and been very inspired. There is a specific challenge from my class via CreativeLive that has us shoot into the backlight, and this was from my last couture portrait session!
