The first photo assignment is "around the house" This covers a considerable range from macros to textures, pets, kids, furniture, sculptures, art, renovating, cleaning, flowers, etc.

Thanks to Bahandi for suggesting this new forum :lightbulb and thanks to tegan for this month's idea.

OK - now who is going to be brave enough to post first? :D

so.... Is it one submission per person??

Marko

Personally, I think we can submit multiple times if we feel ambitious...but maybe it's best to post only one image per post. Thx!

I'll be first then - Here's a quick one that i took of my cat just hanging around the house. I have a couple more to come as well!

yup the mouse and the rest of the photo are out of focus...and there is a serious hot spot on the desk.

Just curious? why didn't you try to at least get the mouse in focus? ;)

thx

this was one of my first shots with my camera...

didn't realize how bad it was until i linked it.. lol. I actually haven't looked at my first set of pics closely as i'm trying very much to learn how to take better pictures.

Being in the midst of moving, this could other fantastic as an opportunity or a complete nightmare for others to see...

wow.. that leaf is so crisp.. lol... i don't know if it takes away from the picture though.

In other words, i want to see the dog, but the focus on the leaf keeps ripping my eyes away from it.. lol

Your eyes are drawn to the falling leaf because it's the primary subject of the picture. If I focused on the dog the leaf would be a brown blob and the shot would be essentially ruined. I would have preferred the leaf to be bright red or some other colour that would make it stand out from the background. But I took this picture yesterday so fresh leafs were not an option. :)

I really like this shot Travis! I just wish the falling leaf and the background were a bit diiferent in tone so that the leaf would stand out more...

Not to be too much of a stickler..but does this fit the theme?

I was putting away my Camera and stuff this morning and recalled this thread, so even though it was not really thought out I snapped a photo off, my contribution to the thread. This is in my Studio (Just on a Technicality issue it is in my house) behind my Laptop. Oh the Girl is not my photo unfortunately but there to inspire. The whole wall behind my desk is covered in photos I took and a few to inspire.

lol... this was taken in my back yard so I figured it was around the house... but I see from your question that the assignment is "Inside the House".... I will post a pic from inside :)

I agree with colour of the leaf matching background.... I suppose I could cut and paste a nicer leaf but this isn't really my thing.... the only editing I used on this pic is unsharp mask on the leaf to make it stand out a little more... it didn't look as crisp when viewed at 100%... most likely because the leaf was moving and I was on manual focus...

i had a hard time finding a picture i thought was appropriate for this theme - to me, theres too many options for 'around the house'. :p but i ended up choosing this picture. its random and taken in my house. the glass beads are a window hanging thing, and the glass vase is something we picked up in mexico, in a glass blowing shop.

I like this shot as well Travis - Perhaps a bit more contrast might make it even better but i like it!

What was the aperture on this shot?

f7.1

was that a working clock? imagine setting a slower shutter speed to catch the movement of the second hand... that would have been cool

How do you know this bahandi? - I thought this was travis's shot?

f7 iso400 2.5 second exposure @ 105mm

thanks... I've actually had a hard time finding something indoors worth my attention photographing... I need more indoor creativity... I have a bunch of other shots of this barometer from side @ 2.8 with DOF highlighting just one of the words... but I ended up liking the straight ahead detailed shot better...

Bahandi - This is not a clock, it's a barometer... I would need to leave my shutter open for days to track it's movement... :)

:footinmou i'm such an idiot.. lol

marko... there are plugins for firefox that allow you to right click a picture and view the exif data (properties) should they be attached to the picture... i'm not sure which one i picked, as there are many third party plugins, but the one i chose gives a basic display of the exif data.

Selectively brightening the head of the cat would really improve this photo.

Lose the background and the chain, and bring up the eyes and you would have a good photo.

I like the colours and back lighting... but too me the space
the center is kinda vacant...

school me on why this is good composition...

tegan

OK, I am not sure exactly what you mean by the centre is kinda vacant.
Composition-wise, three is the ideal number of flowers, which also divide the image in thirds. It would have been better with a fuller bloom in the centre and the water further to the left toward the main centre of focus.

Horticulture does not always co-operate and I admit to being a terrible gardner. My wife does all the planting.

By the way, this was a hanging plant from a wooden "fence" near my deck at the back of my house. Shot at f22 at about 1/6 of a second at ISO 100 with a f.2.8 18 to 50mm lens.

To get a little off-the-wall, this is from a painting. :D

Sorry to give you an "attaboy"..... but "attaboy"... I think a cropped eye shot of a painting is very cool....

nothing I would change on this one...

Is that the Sigma Lens? If so how do you find it?

Yes, that is a Sigma lens and I like it very much. The 50mm end produces a 75mm equivalent which is great for portraiture along with the 2.8 which can blur out the background. Bokeh is good as well. With macro throughout too and the equivalent of 27mm at the wide angle end, it becomes an overall good lens to have on the camera most of the time.

The polarizer for it by the way was around $200 but extremely thin, high quality, break, scratch and stain resistant multi-coated glass which transmits a lot of light through it.

I am waiting for the Sigma 70mm to 200mm 2.8 macro which will give me great flexibility through to the equivalent of 300mm in fairly low light.

Thanks, Travis, I think there is a very intense, almost dangerous look to the eyes, but perhaps that is only my interpretation.

i like the eyes shot too - funny how the glasses seem to have a touch of glare on them, even though its a painting! :) i think i'd rather have the full left hand glasses frame showing though, instead of the tiny bits cropped off the bottom and side.
