Even though I've seen 1/2 dozen garter snakes this year, I've been lousy at photographing them. Accidentally scared this little cutie frozen so had time to switch to the 90mm macro and got just a few inches from it. Probably it's a newborn from last year and is only 10 inches long and thinner than a pencil. Hopefully this season is good and it can make it to next year.

Nice shot WD. Crisp and sharp.
None here yet, but it is supposed to drop into minus digits again within a few days:sad:

Nice catch WD  I just love getting shots of these guys but last year I only saw a couple. The previous year they were all over the place, I'm hoping for more this year :)

Thanks guys. I was lucky s/he stayed petrified for so long. At least it was in the sun.

Nicely done, WD. I don't often see snakes at all around here but I think it's mostly because I'm not looking in the right place. You captured this one well, I like it.

Thanks everyone. I had hopes it would taste the air so I could get a shot of that flickery little tounge, but alas. Oh and upon further reflection I think this is a ribbon snake not a garter snake, similar, but differently colored. Maybe with luck I'll see other varieties besides those two.
