Very cool! It does look like it would be kind of unwieldy but I bet it was a lot better than the alternative of nothing!

So, how can you tell it's selective sharpening vs good choice for DOF or can that be the same thing?

An experienced eye will pick out the clues Iggy. Look at the sharp seat back, perfectly in focus and almost touching the rough stone wall. The wall, however, is softnened, as is everything else around the subject. By carefully blending my sharpened subject into my softened and subdued coloured foreground and background elements I isolate the subject, remove distractions, and create a soft, old style feel to the whole shot.

Wow. I love this picture. Thanks for the explanation to Iggy on the post processing. When I get more proficient with photoshop, I will have to try that instead of simply using DOF.

I think I understand now. Due to the angle, DOF would have some of the wall and some of the chair in focus and other parts not in focus. You couldn't really separate the chair from the wall with DOF only. In this case, selective sharpening does the trick. Cool!
