Nice suggestion by your son. I do like the black and white, and also the vignette.
As you are asking for comments and you are OK with critique , I wonder if you are able to draw attention to the hull of the boat and make the sky even more dramatic through some selective dodging and burning. I think that may enhance both versions, but the colour image in particular.
I definitely prefer the B&W versions. My preference is #1 as it appears to have a softer look to it which is what a ghost ship would be like.

The reworks have certainly punched out that boat. They look like HDR shots.
After seeing them I am not so sure if my suggestion was better. To my eye it may be a bit overdone. I guess in the end it comes down to your personal preference.
