Hi all,
Until recently I rarely shot anything that didn't have a face and a mother...but I'm trying my hand at many different styles these days...mainly due to all the inspiration I'm seeing round here so...Thanks!
This was shot at Butchart gardens in Victoria B.C. F 7.1 1/30 ISO 1000
I could have whacked my head into a rock for not bringing a tripod with me...but we do the best we can with what we have onhand.

I really like this. I just have one thing that bothers me. The other flowers in the back keep pulling my attention off the flower when I am trying to look at details of the in-focus flower.

Looks a bit desaturated but better than beating it death and having the colours bleed out every where....
I would love to try shooting this as an exercise... the goal would be to fill the tiny crevices with light... I bet that would be tuff...
Considering your circumstances this shot is great.... can't even tell (on my work monitor) any sign of high ISO...
Thanks for the comments! I actually darkened some of those background flowers...maybe i need to go a bit darker.
Yup ISO 1000 - the light was fading fast and I wanted a bit of DOF and the shutter was 1/30 handheld. Had I had a tripod I would likely have shot this at ISO 400 and not cared about the shutterspeed.

I might have centred the in-focus flower bulb a little lower in the shot...but that's being a bit picky...love the foreground/background subject balance and the colours!

A great centre of interest, but the three flowers in the background need to contribute to the effectiveness of the overall shot. They create a diagonal which is good, but the diagonal does NOT lead toward the centre of interest.
I would be inclined to clone out the distracting background flower closest to the centre of interest.

I agree with the comments about the LH side and the other flowers not contributing a great deal to the image. One thing you might try is a circular crop. It's rare that you get an almost perfectly circular subject, and when I played around with a couple of pieces of paper, I could see potential. Crop as wide around the main bloom as you can, and mount that with a matching complimentary coloured matte and I think you'd have a really unique image.

what a neat flower - looks like a chinese paper lantern or something!
the 2nd one takes the cake for me. now with only 2 flowers in the background, it looks much better...
