Orton stab

So, I know I said that I don't really like post, but you guys have inspired me. I thought I'd take a stab at Orton, and have tried it on several of my photos. Definitely challenging to find suitable subject matter! What do you think of this one?

I like it. It is quite painterly looking, I think.

It's not looking very Orton like to me...but I like the painterly treatment anyway.

First off, thanks for sharing one of your shots! I know that can be a bit intimidating if you are not used to doing it so kudos to you!

Secondly, it's an interesting shot and I like the result but like Marko said I'm not sure it's very "Ortony" either. I think I've been just lucky with a couple of mine as a brightly lit forest scene seems work well with this treatment.

Thanks guys. This was a very difficult shot from the start, but I can see what you guys mean. The day I took the shot, it was about -30c, and very weird light. I think my mistake may have been starting with a version that I had already processed from RAW to give it a more "painterly" look. I might try doing the Orton from RAW, or from the JPG version. I also found a couple other Orton processes that I might try on it.

the snow in the foreground is where i see the biggest issue. you need more blacks in there. you can do that by selecting that part in a layer and playing with that selection only until it fits your vision, then soften the edges with a bit of a feather.

I think you can reduce the effect on the foreground object

I'm going to let this one sit awhile. I have tried so many different things with it, I'm not sure where to go next.
