I actually find the trees distracting in this shot. The clouds are interesting and nice tonal range, but the trees break it up.
I like it but agree about the trees. when I move the image so just the top in showing with the branches in the bottom it looked neat.
but I also like the grass texture in the bottom.
the clouds are stunning. How did they look in colour?
Actually, for me, it's the area behind the line of trees. I think the trees definitely add to the drama, stark, bare, etc, but the evergreens, fence etc behind them spoil the mood.

I love the drama of the BW on the clouds but much prefer the color as it blends everything together!

I think that I'm partial to the color version of this shot. The foreground in the B&W seems too dark in contrast to the eerily white clouds. That said, the title of this post was "going for drama" which I think the B&W shot achieved.
Black and white conversion does not save a boring picture, you migght want to add some interesting foreground
It's pretty late since you posted this awhile ago and pretty likely you've improved. I think the problem with the shot is that you didn't balance out the shot enough. It is a beautiful view but if you are looking to improve constructive criticism can be good. In my opinion to balance out the shot more you would need to have less field or grass.
The clouds are by far the most interesting part of this shot, however, the clouds by themselves are not enough to hold my attention. An interesting foreground element would have made a much stronger impression. My preference is also for the colour version. :twocents:
I would love to see this shot from a lower perspective, closer to the ground with the trees lower in the image and more of the clouds. If you lost the field at the bottom, I think it would bring the trees closer, making it an interesting "foreground". But thumbs up on the clouds, I'm a sucker for awesome clouds! :D

EDIT: I was going for a more panoramic style crop but now that I see it here I realize it just looks cut off....sorry to butcher your image EJC!
I like your edit F8 - maybe 'slightly' more tree on the bottom...but I like.
I agree with Marko, just a tad more trees and it should help ground the image, making it feel less 'floaty' if that's even a word. ;)Quote:
