Ruins

A fake IR effect of some old ruins. They are actually quite popular as a backdrop for portraits but not from this view. Flickr had some Halloween graphics so I had to fancy up the sig. :)http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2598/...709eb1f6_o.jpg

Well done raiven! I'm not familiar with these ruins. Where are they?

The treatment is interesting but I'm not sold on the subject. I just don't find it interesting. The bright sun (blown in a couple of spots) and heavy shadow seem to clash for me. Maybe it's due to the fake IR effect.

All that being said it looks like a fairly good technical shot of a difficult subject in bad lighting conditions.

Thanks for the comments all! EJC, they are on 12th Avenue S.E. at about 6th Street. They are known as Rundle ruins and are the ruins of the old General Hospital that later became an old folks home.

you obviously have talent but the shot is boring.

I think that this is one of those shots that does not fit into any neat category. I can see Iggy's point about there being no real subject but that appeals to me (so I guess that makes it art, huh? ;)). I like the play of light and dark on the walls. the shot for me creates a sense of mystery and ominousness (if that's even a word). Reminds me of early suspense movies a la 'the spiral staircase' and 'gaslight'.

Raiven, I like the lighting opportunity here, but it just does not seem to work imo. The shadows on the right side of the ruin, but the main arch is completely engulfed in a shadow. Maybe you could catch it at another time where there is more light on the arch, but the way the ruin is situated it may not be possible?

With that being said, I love the effort here. It still is a great photograph, but being here in the critique thread, it is going to get picked apart as you have asked. All in all, good job, it just does reach into the upper echelon of photography. We have witnessed you are capable of some great work, sometimes you cant always be a winner.
