In this set of pictures, although the effect is interesting, I find it most suitable only to the last image where the effect is subtle and adds to the image.
Personally, when an 'effect' like this takes over the portrait it seems to me that effect is going too far. IMO, portraits should stand on their own and should only be aided by an 'effect' not overtaken by the effect.
That's why I like the last image, because it works with the image in a subtle way.
