Soft?

Sorry...Newbie here;

When someone says your photograph is "soft" is that just a nice way of saying blurry? Or does it point to something different?

It generally refers to an image that is slightly out of focus; not blurry per se, but perhaps a very slight camera shake, or perhaps the focus point was missed or a too-shallow depth of field.

Blurry isn't something you usually strive for, unless you want to create strange tension in the photograph. This is a scenario where you would "know the rule" and would want to break it, otherwise it looks like a poor photograph.

Soft is often desirable, think babies, "angelic" children, window light portraits, etc.
