Where are these artifacts?
Artifacts might not be the right terms. I am talking about the white ellipse on the lower left part of the image.
I guess that this is probably normal with such a lens?
It looks like a sort of flare. Some people will remember mirror reflective lenses? 500 mm, cheap, light, fun right? When you took a photo such as this with water and sun you would get donut shaped "Bokeh" flare. Here is a good example of the donuting:

I suspect your eclipses are a similar effect.
Those 500mm mirror backs were awesome. They made such an awesome bokeh at times. :)
