This is an ancient volcanic plug rising up out of the earth. You can see the evidence of the lava flow in the rocks along path.

Lower forest floor was covered with these Northern Beech Ferns. (not the greatest shot, but because of the lighting, this was shot at iso 5000)

Didn't go all the way to the top, as the weather changed, and you could not see clearly over a half mile anyway.

Looks like a very cool place for photo excursions. I hope to see more of it in the future.

Very cool. Looks like a volcanic plug. We have several of those around our area. I really should pull finger and start getting decent shots of those.

Definitely tough going once you get two thirds up, but there are permanent ropes to use for the climb once you get to the near vertical section. Will definitely be going back, actually, maybe tomorrow, as weather is supposed to break tonight.:fingerscr

That is quite the "nipple" you found there. What is the elevation difference from ground level to top? Oh, and by the way, those shades of green in the first shot are maaaaaavelous - from the young new fresh growth with the light green to to old growth in the dark green; just wonnnnerful

Thanks a bunch Matt. You know, I am not sure of elevation diff. Will have to take reading off GPS at bottom and top to check this. I just wish the trail to top was on East side as it is much less vertical.

That little mountain really stands out agaist the rest of the terrain. A quick google search indicates that it rises 500 meters above sea level. Kirkland Lake is 243 meters above sea level. So assuming the bottom is the same as Kirkland Lake, the Mount is 257 Meters high. The side you took the picture from is so steep it looks like you need to be a rock climber to get to the top. Is the other side less steep so you can more or less hike up ?

Looking at pic. the trail would be on the West, (right), side, which goes pretty vertical. There is a very dangerous section for the top one third of the climb that is a sheer drop and a lot of rock climbing.
Well, we are off to try again. Sun is just starting to burn off this wonderful morning mist, and should be a good day temp. wise for a climb.

Thank you Marko. There are so many photo-ops just around the base of this it is unreal. There is also a fire tower on the next one to the west.
Actually, friend of ours just on property North of us is scraping his freshly made runway as I type this. Should be cool to get some aerial shots of the area.:cool:
