I was very excited to see the new podcast. For the longest time I wanted to know how to do this but never could. First go at a photo that really didn't do much for me but thought would be good for this technique. I'm soooo excited here. Gonna be a long night tonight!

Both Michael Orton and Darwin Wiggett gave excellent insight into the technique during the interview.

I didn't even know this had a "proper" name - I've been using a variation of this technique for a long time - in fact, it's one of my function keys, I have a few image treatments as actions set so I can quickly visualize some options on images.
The one I most use is to duplicate the image, desaturate it, gaussian blur it, set layer mode to overlay and reduce the opacity to taste.
Doesn't work for everything, but can be quite nice from time to time when you want some "flavour"...
