Sunset Trials with Flash

had the opportunity to shoot the same sunset with differnt f-stop settings using a flash to shed some light on the foreground ... any comments as to which one you think works best?

This is with F 5.6

I'd go with the last one I think...

I like the sky exposure in the first 2 shots but the flash looks a bit harsh. Did you dial in any flash compensation?

Matt I like the last one and you have adopted the Casil tilt to your image as well :headslap: Seeing the green instead of a full silhouette is interesting and unexpected with the third shot it's dark enough to be believable.

I have to agree-the last one is the best. Just fix the tilt and all will be fine. :)

Thanks, Greg (Bambi), but you guys are looking at the shadow line, and not at the actual water edge line, which is perfectly horizontal ... check it out on the first image ...

Nope, no compensation dialed in. Just experimented with the different settings, flash on TTL. I have to agree with all of you, tho, the last one is the most convincing one.

Richard makes a VERY good observation on the flash compensation!

For me shot 1 is the best (OVERALL - look at the amazing sky and water colour - in all the other shots they are too dark because of underexposure). Had you dialed down the intensity of JUST the flash (via exposure compensation)...shot one would look much more natural. :twocents:

thanks for the advise. I have not yet played around with any of the compensation values on any of my shots. This is something stil foreign to me and something I have to experiment with. I know there is exposure compensation and flash compensation, but not quite sure what to do with them as of yet. So thanks for rattling my cage to learn about these features.:thumbup:
