Since she can only submit one image for the BETA Club, we talked to the teacher and she is letting change her category to a color image. She is submitting this image over the B/W image of the civil war tents

My personal choice would have been the tent shot, however it is up to Maddy. So go for it and good luck !!!

Both are technically good shots, but the tents shot came out dark in print. Best thing about this bull image is the framing with the wood on the bottom and right side and the barbwire across the top.

One thing about the judging, I feel it will just be judged by teachers, not a photographer, so this images a little more viewer friendly.

Thanks for the explanation. I was judging this with the bias of being an adult and a photographer. Thinking about it, this cool and funny pic of the bull does fit better.

As an aside - Just wondering .... you said the tents shot came out dark in print. Do you have your monitor calibrated. Prints will usually come out darker if the monitor is uncalibrated as people will tend to have the brightness set too high.

My monitor is not calibrated, but I have never had a problem with prints. I think it is Costco. I had never used them before, and probably never will again. This bull image came out OK.

Funny thing today. I asked her what her teacher thought of her image and did anyone else submit a photograph. She said, "My teacher really liked it, and a lot of other kids had images, but they are all out of focus and don't have"3 Rules" (rule of thirds)!"

    She is a critic already.

    Proud Daddy moment!!!

    the Beta Convention was today.

Out of 1000's of entries into the State level Beta color photography submissions, Maddy took 4th, and this is among kids from 11 to 17, not just 11 year olds.
