When I went to buy the D800 I also bought a Tokina 16-28, since my 12-24 was in the hospital getting an estimate for having it repaired. The ring holding the filter thread was loose, and somehow the zoom ring would only work occasionally. So I went to my trusted camera Store and sent it in.

The verdict was: "I have received your Repair Estimate for your Lens. Estimate is $254.93. Please let me know if you would like to Proceed ...".

Well, I bought this lens on eBay for 350 dollars, so I said: no, have it returned and I will pick it up. So I did pick it up. Took it home. Looked at it ... looked at it some more ... nothing changed, still the same ... so I started looking for screws of some sort. Figured: this one is toast, so I might as well have a look inside. Figured out how to remove the front ring with the filter thread ... then three screws became visible ... and I could lift the ring right off the lens. So I did ....

The i turned the lens upside down, figuring if there was something stuck in it, it would fall out ... nothing did. So I put the ring back, tightened the screws and re-attached the ring covering the screws. The ring was nice and fixed, so screwing in a filter should not be a problem ... and guess what: the zoom ring worked just like it did before I had this little incident. So I mounted the lens, and it focused just fine, zoomed just fine and the aperture blades worked like they were supposed to. Manual focus not a problem, automatic focus neither.

$254.93?????????????????????????????

Methinks I am going to have a word with my store ......
