    the price is a little higher than I was wanting, but not too much higher ($1200)

    I have a 28-300mm Variable zoom by Nikon - It's on my camera 75% + of the time when I'm doing personal work because the range is pure fab and the sharpness is really good.
    If anything like that is available for Canon...I'd recommend trying it out.

    Tamron has something like a 24-250mm, reasonably priced. I own three Tamron lenses and has been happy with all of them.
