'mush'room picture

funny story that belongs with this picture...
i was on a photo drive, checking out the location for this upcoming engagement/family shoot i'm attempting in a few weeks.
i spotted a nice clump of mushrooms, and didn't mind getting down & dirty in the soggy, moldy, mossy ground.
i was flat on my stomach, rolling a little to get a good angle, the right lighting etc.
when i put my hand down to get up, something went 'mush'....
thats right.
dog poo.
fresh dog poo.
at least the place i was at had water pumps and hand sanitizer in the outhouses, but ew!
and i ended up liking the shots i got of the shrooms, so i guess it was worth it...

An out-of-focus foreground distracts from the centre of interest and is considered a weakness in this type of photo. This problem is compounded by the shallow depth of field resulting in the top part of the main mushroom being blurred as well.

The two photographic options are isolate the centre of interest by shooting from a camera position at the far right so that the mushroom is in sharp focus with a blurred background OR use high ISO, tripod, or off camera flash to increase the depth of field and area of focus.

Agree with Tegan's comments (Did I really say that twice in one day???? ) In addition to his suggestions for extending the DoF, you can also consider different compositions. Since Inky Caps are a fairly tall, narrow mushroom, you can get interesting images shooting straight down from above as well.
